Courtney S. Cohen (NJ, PA, and Online) LCSW, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, Duke-trained Integrative Health Coach

Hello! I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker based in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. In my private practice, I work exclusively with women around the themes of body image, self-worth, self-sabotaging behaviors, and the desire to live with intention and purpose. Many women that I speak with come to me with a desire to end their obsession with food, body weight, and the scale. On the outside, it appears that their problems have to do with their body acceptance and weight, but I have found that concerns about these issues often point to pain from the past that needs to be explored. Often, my clients feel trapped in lives they are living for other people; they are perfectionists and “Mary Marvels” who feel like they don’t deserve to stop and think about what they really want. Or, they have been “leveled” by life, battling mental health issues, substance abuse, or trouble in relationships, and can’t seem to move forward no matter what they do. I have found Dr. McBride’s 5-step recovery model to be invaluable in helping women to work through the trauma that is often underlying more superficial issues. Often, through this work, clients are finally able to feel “seen” and validated. They realize that their struggle is not their fault. It is through this realization that they can begin to heal and live the lives they have imagined.

Being part of the WIEBGE registry is an important part of my work, as it allows us to take Dr. McBride’s knowledge, expertise, and step-by-step process into our everyday lives and apply what has been learned to real-life situations, such as when dealing with our mothers on an ongoing basis, and in learning to face what behaviors we engage in regularly that hold us back, due to old wounds. It is crucial for me as a therapist to be able to help my clients work the 5-step recovery model in a supported way.

I am also trained as a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, Duke-Trained Integrative Health Coach, and Mindfulness-Based Eating Awareness Trainer. I work exclusively with women to address an array of issues, from depression and anxiety to emotional eating and body acceptance. Karyl McBride’s 5-step recovery model is a useful tool for many of my clients, who relate to feelings of inadequacy, never measuring up, and just feeling generally “lost.” It is my passion to help women to discover themselves again and help them to realize that the roadblocks they continue to run into in their lives are not their fault. There is a way forward. While I do not accept any insurance currently, I do see clients on a sliding scale when appropriate. Currently, appointments are through Telehealth only due to Covid-19.
