I was given a copy of “Will I Ever Be Good Enough” many years ago by a colleague who knew that I was interested in Borderline and Narcissistic Family Systems in my own private practice. Since then, I have taken the Level I and II postgraduate training's offered by Dr. McBride. Dr. McBride’s 5 step model has been a great tool in working with clients and families. Her book and the 5 step model have provided a framework to work with and greatly impact this population. One of the problems is that survivors often have a chaotic structure to their lives and although they feel things very deeply, they often don’t have the means to develop a way out that is systematic and effective, making it very difficult to achieve any lasting relief from a variety of symptoms including depression, anxiety, addiction, and autoimmune difficulty.
Being the adult child of a parent with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) or Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is extremely challenging. These adult children become developmentally interrupted, often ending up in destructive relationships, out of touch with their own needs, and/or developing other destructive behavior and coping mechanisms. When the root cause is discovered and defined, it gives the client the opportunity to understand, accept and grieve the cumulative wounding. This in turn will create a safe internal space to define and develop the original core self and complete the interrupted developmental work, enabling the client to act upon the world instead of falling victim to the world acting on them.
