I discovered Dr. McBride’s first book in 2010 and immediately began applying her five-step recovery model to help adult children of narcissistic parents. I have completed her Level I and Level II Certification.
I have 15 years of experience as a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Certified EMDR Therapist. I have specialized in EMDR since 2006 and have seen how quickly it helps clients move through the acceptance, grief, trauma, and boundary setting work of Dr. McBride’s model. I am also a Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist. Prior to becoming a therapist, I had a career in the corporate world, and draw upon this experience when providing career coaching.
I incorporate EMDR psychotherapy with Dr. McBride’s books and recovery model to help women and men understand and resolve the negative effects of being raised by a narcissistic parent or being in a relationship with a narcissistic partner. EMDR provides quick and lasting shifts to negative self-perceptions (for example: “I’m not good enough” or “I don’t matter” or “I’m powerless”) and dramatically diminishes the distress associated with memories of upsetting events.
I specialize in helping adults overcome the lasting negative effects that stressful or traumatic life experiences, including a childhood of not getting enough affirmation, attention, and affection, have on how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. Criticism, rejection, humiliation, abandonment, loss, abuse, and other types of trauma are very often the root cause of present-day problems like anxiety, depression, anger, self-doubt, rumination, recurring bad dreams, or the sense that no matter how hard you work or what you do you can’t find sustained peace, love or satisfaction in your personal life or career. Ultimately, through our work clients develop a more genuine connection with their authentic self, so they can connect in healthier ways with others.
I also draw upon an intensive training program I completed with Pia Mellody. This training covered a therapy model that addresses how growing up with parents who are not nurturing or are abusive in other ways creates developmental immaturity and issues around self-esteem, boundaries, codependence, vulnerability, addiction, mood disorders, and relationship struggles.
My style as a counselor is friendly, conversational, nurturing, and accepting. Clients comment on how quickly they feel at ease with me and how easy it is to share their thoughts and feelings with me. They also appreciate my practical, organized approach to therapy and my ability to identify the key issues within their many life stories. I love working as a therapist! I am grateful to my clients for the privilege of hearing their stories and the experience of helping them feel better and achieve their goals.
