Therapist Referral Network

Mary Elizabeth Christy-Cirillo, MFT (San Francisco Bay Area and Online)

Mary Christy-CirilloI am a Marriage Family Therapist in private practice, working with adults and children for the last 27 years in the San Francisco Bay Area. My emphasis has been on early attachment and its effect on later relationships, both intrapersonal and interpersonal, in the livelihood and awareness of my patients. Delineating, differentiating, supporting, and healing our essential nature and needs is the opportunity within the therapeutic relationship. When earlier patterns or schemas of attachment have ignored an individual’s basic needs, one can feel overwhelmed with feelings of inadequacy and depression. Yet such feelings can be a signal to begin the journey back to our authentic self; a crisis is also an opportunity for renewal.

I am so grateful to finally have such a concise step-by-step model to use with all my patients who need this support.  I have completed Dr. Karyl McBride’s WIEBGE (Will I Ever Be Good Enough) therapist training and 5-Step Recovery Model to continue my work with patients raised by narcissistic parents.  Dr. McBride has compiled all of the research and psychological study that we use and need as therapists in a patient-friendly product. Her book, “Will I Ever Be Good Enough? Healing the Daughters of Narcissistic Mothers”, also provides a resource and comfort to my patients who are struggling to trust their own feelings during the process of recovery.

I have had great success with masks, puppets, and sand trays to support the grief to the recovery process, but I find each patient’s process is unique to differentiate from the primary parenting they were given. Some patients begin journaling and finish with a book on a different topic; the daily writing brought a gift to their attention they had taken for granted.  While others create their own doll to work within their recovery. The natural artistry and intelligence of the individual are given room in this particular model. My patients and I are mutually enjoying this process since it allows an opening for insight and release. Learning about one’s own internal mother and father is part of the journey and Dr. McBride’s 5-Step Recovery Model supports that individuation.
